AI : Do the benefits outweigh the drawbacks?

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a transformative force shaping our daily lives and future societies. It is no longer a concept of the distant future; it now influences everything from how we work and communicate to how we think and learn. New generations are being born already immersed in this kind of technology. They are already accustomed to disconnection from nature and many people around the World are feeling the effects of automated services on their jobs and, in turn, their lives.

They are always on smartphones and they really don’t know how to socialize in real life. Ai is always in our lives: for example when they need help they can ask Chat gpt for their homework, it temperature controls our homes, it even controls what we see in the world (this is why we need to teach critical thinking).

Do the benefits of AI technology outweigh the negatives? Let's take a look.

In recent years, artificial intelligence has become so much a part of our lives that we hardly notice it. While it can be good in many ways one of the biggest issues is that people are starting to lose their jobs. Many of the low income jobs are being automated. Already in stores we have automated checkouts that are replacing cashiers.., chat bots (customer service agent replacements), data processing (replacing many entry-level office workers). Not to mention that in manufacturing industries machines are building, creating and perfecting products instead of people. Robots are being created that are capable of taking care of the home, so even these kind of jobs are being replaced.

How many jobs will be lost in the coming years due to automation? What will we do if our jobs are done by robots or automated machines? what will we live on? It is normal to wonder and it is normal to be afraid. These are some of the questions we are asking ourselves that are still difficult to answer. Certainly, one of the biggest challenges in the coming years will be to figure out how to ensure human beings coexist with artificial intelligence.

The other issue that is concerning is that AI technology has contributed to an increasing disconnection from our natural rhythms. This, ultimately, could be the root of the issue. If people are sick mentally and physically, what are they going to create, and with what characteristics? Born into a world dominated by screens, algorithms, and digital conveniences, and parents that come from disconnection, many children today lack opportunities to experience the natural world in a meaningful way. The constant presence = pressure of technology like smartphones, tablets, and AI-driven applications keeps people indoors, even in a dysregulated state.

This disconnection not only affects physical health, with less time spent engaging in physical activity, but it also diminishes mental well-being, as nature has been shown to reduce stress and promote happiness, and even heal us from within and without. Also, a lack of exposure to nature can lead to a diminished understanding of ecological systems and environmental stewardship, which is critical in the face of climate challenges. If AI continues to replace human interaction and the need for outdoor exploration, future generations risk losing a fundamental part of what makes us human.
